Sony is no longer exclusive? Samsung s factory will supply Apple image sensor

Marketplace is being released, Samsung Electronics will produce digital image sensors for Apple Inc. in Texas.

The British Financial Times quoted an unnamed source on the 7th as saying that although Apple announced on Wednesday (August 6) it would cooperate with Samsung Texas Austin’s semiconductor factory, it did not explain what kind of “unprecedented innovative chip manufacturing technology” to be released.

According to sources familiar with transaction details, Samsung will create a three-layer stacked image sensor for the iPhone 18 released in Apple Pre-decision (2026), which is mainly used for the image capture function of smart phone lenses.

Apple stated through a statement that Samsung will supply chips to Apple devices including iPhones in Texas chip factories. "The chips supplied by this factory will optimize the power and performance of the Apple device, including the iPhone."

Lee Jong-hwan, a professor in the Department of Semiconductor Engineering at Xiangming University, said Samsung appears to have won an Apple order because of the U.S. taxes imminently charged for chips, because Sony is not in the U.S. factory. This means that Sony is no longer an exclusive image sensor supplier for Apple. Sony's image sensor is commissioned to manufacture TECHNOLOG.

Lee also pointed out that after the U.S. tax levy, Japanese chip businesses such as Sony will face a fight, and Samsung's strategy to expand U.S. capacity will also receive a reply.
