TA Preview: Manchester City can copy the tactics of the last round of Premier League games and Salah will influence this game
Manchester City reporter Jordan Campbell and Liverpool reporter Andy Jones will analyze key issues. 👇
How do you think your club’s coach will handle this game?
Jordan Campbell (Manchester City reporter): I wouldn't be surprised if Guardiola's side lost more possession at certain points today than we are used to - as they have done in other important games this season.
This style of play helps them create counter-attacking opportunities for striker Erling Haaland, something they have been unable to do since his early months in English football three years ago - before teams realized they should defend as deep as possible to limit his space.
The question is whether Guardiola believes he can field such a bold lineup as he did in last weekend's 3-1 home victory over second-placed Bournemouth. For the first time, he sent out Phil Foden and this summer's new signing Leyan Cherki at the same time, but changed his past habit of favoring wide wingers and placed these two players and Jeremy Doku in the center.
The synergy of these three players allows Manchester City to quickly organize the offense and defeat Bournemouth's counterattack in the midfield. While Liverpool does not have a traditional defensive midfielder, Manchester City can try to copy this tactic.
Andy Jones (Liverpool reporter): When playing away at the Etihad Stadium in February last season, coach Slott changed to a 4-2-4 formation, allowing Curtis Jones and Dominic Szoboszlai to partner in the double No. 10 position. It was a rare departure from his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and football philosophy, as his team had just 34% possession in that game.
Liverpool has made positive progress in the last two games, ending the decline of losing six of the previous seven games and achieving two consecutive wins. The return of the experienced Robertson at left-back and the reunion of the defending champions' proven midfield trio of Gravenberch, McAllister and Szoboszlai have helped the team regain cohesion and distinctive style.
Which player can influence the game?
Jordan Campbell (Manchester City reporter): I won’t go into details about Haaland. We all know how critical he is. He has scored 13 goals in the Premier League this season.
Cherki may be the one who can send magical passes, even if he comes off the bench. The French midfielder, who joined from Lyon this summer, gradually adapted to the rhythm of the Premier League after two months of injury recuperation. Since his return in mid-October, Guardiola has mainly used him as a surprise substitute.
Andy Jones (Liverpool reporter): The obvious best candidate is Mohamed Salah. He is always the answer. His performance in the last two games has been more like the forward who has been a consistent performer for Liverpool for many years. When he's confident and his teammates are able to pass him the ball in good positions, he's always a game-winner.
What is your team’s biggest advantage this season? What's the biggest disadvantage?
Jordan Campbell (Manchester City reporter): They can maximize Haaland’s advantages. Last season, he was often completely shut out of games, but this season City have shown great adaptability, which makes them a threat whether they face intensive defense or high pressing.
Their weakness is their inability to maintain sustained intensity throughout the game. City have yet to completely dominate a game, which is increasingly difficult in the Premier League, but they have lost control at times and the fragility of last season is starting to show again.
Andy Jones (Liverpool reporter): Liverpool’s performance this season has been ups and downs, and it’s difficult to point out their biggest advantage. Their seven-game winning streak at the start of the season was a result of their strong spirit and late goals, but there were flaws in those performances that were exposed in subsequent defeats.
The team's advantage in the past two games is that the midfield trio is as good as last season. There are also some urgent problems in other positions of the team, and the good form of Gravenberg, McAllister and Szoboszlai have helped the team resolve many of these crises.
What is your predicted score? Why?
Jordan Campbell (Manchester City reporter): Manchester City has many offensive ways to defeat its opponents, and the team also has the best player in the league at seizing opportunities-Harland. Haaland's all-round ability has taken a step further this season and it's hard to imagine him not scoring at least one goal in every game. I believe both sides will score goals, but Manchester City has greater adaptability and richer substitute options and is more likely to win the game. Prediction: Home team wins 2-1.
Andy Jones (Liverpool reporter): Liverpool has not suffered four consecutive away defeats in the Premier League since 2012, and I support them to avoid this situation. However, their record at the Etihad Stadium is worrying. Last year's win was the exception and City were a lot better than the team we saw that day. Prediction: 2-2 draw.
